About Core Music

In 2008, our very own BBC Unsung Hero, Mike Coleman had a vision to make music accessible to all, and Core Music was born.  Core’s vision going forward is to sustain as well as to expand its musical provision in the community.  “The benefits of music to both young and old, in terms of improving health and wellbeing, has been well documented and it is Core’s aim to continue to promote its services and make music accessible to even more.”

Core has been at the heart of the Hexham and Tynedale community for the last 12 years:

  • running special events

  • supporting local festivals

  • hosting small concerts

  • running regular weekly clubs

  • facilitating workshops

  • providing lessons for drums, piano, guitar, violin, saxophone, clarinet, flue, voice and more…

Whether it is to learn and study towards grade exams or just to play for fun, Core Music offers a safe, friendly and non-judgemental environment where people of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy music.

Core Music Shop

Core stocks a comprehensive range of:

  • musical instruments

  • musical accessories

  • music books

  • a repair service for musical instruments

  • the go-to place for information and tickets for any musical events happening in the area

As a Community Interest Company, our shop and trading activities help to fund the business and we also rely on grants and loans from funding bodies as well as donations from individuals.

We have a ‘Friends of Core Music’ scheme for supporters who would like to become regular supporters of Core Music.

Instrument Amnesty Scheme

We welcome donations of unwanted and unused instruments which we then renovate and refurbish.

We then either rent or sell them at very affordable prices. They are mainly for student/beginners instruments but crucially, they are fit for purpose.

Sometimes new instruments sold for under £40 are so badly prepared that it has a negative affect on the user and in most cases results in people giving up playing.

Our hope is that we can prevent this from happening and give people a positive start to their learning journey.
