About the event

Following the Evie Ladin and Keith Terry concert and workshops at Core Music earlier in May, Core Music is extremely proud to welcome the highly regarded, award winning, and fabulously entertaining bluegrass, Americana & roots band , Stillhouse Junkies, to Hexham.  Their visit to Core Music will feature an evening concert and a pre-concert workshop. The workshop is open to all and will be based on how musicians come together to create a band sound - you do not have to be in a band  to take part!  It is not often that a band of this calibre is able to offer a workshop of this kind.  Their band experience and musicianship is sure excite and inspire all those who attend.

There will be a bar serving a variety of drinks.  If you can buy a drink from the bar, this will help Core Music to continue to stage these top quality events. Many thanks.

Creating that Band Sound Workshop ...

Description:  The workshop will involve chat and demonstrations by Stillhouse Junkies and there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions. From the first note of each to the last, you will learn how to take your arrangements to the next level, regardless of ensemble size or instrumentation. Add the sort of clarity, purpose, and narrative depth to your material that will expand your musical horizons and keep listeners coming back for more.

Intended Audience: Anyone looking to tighten up existing song arrangements or arrange new material for performance, jam, and even hobby settings.

Curriculum: Stillhouse Junkies will take attendees through the challenging and often frustrating process of arranging original material and covers for an ensemble, including the nuances that help songs stand out and keep audiences engaged. Using examples from the band's own repertoire, workshop participants will learn how to put together a bigger picture road map for a song and dive into the particulars of unison/harmonized melody, stops, holds, solos and written instrumental parts, group dynamics, intros, and endings. We'll look at classic formulas from the bluegrass and folk world including two-bar Nashville-style bridges, verse repetition, tagged endings, and a few common twists. Attendees will also develop their musicianship through discussion and demonstration of tasteful comping, fills, solo support, interlocked grooves, and perhaps most importantly, when to just lay out and let the rest of the band play.

From strength to strength ....

Winners of the International Bluegrass Music Association's 2021 Band Momentum Award, Stillhouse Junkies perform an entertaining blend of bluegrass, Americana, Western Swing and country roots. This talented American trio has released three albums to date and recently signed to Nashville's Dark Shadow Recording label.  Fred Kosak (guitar, mandolin, vocals), Alissa Wolf (fiddle, vocals) and Cody Tinnin (double bass, vocals) combine outstanding musicianship, classic harmonies, fine original songs and a dynamic stage presence.  Born out of a long-standing residency at a distillery in Durango, Colorado, Stillhouse Junkies have built a loyal following in their home state and across the American bluegrass scene. They were finalists in the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Festival band contest in 2018 and 2019, and showcase artists at the virtual IBMA event in 2020. They travelled to North Carolina for the 2021 return of the real life International Bluegrass conference and festival, where they wowed audiences with their showcase performances and won the Band Momentum Award. Stillhouse Junkies spent several years performing an average of 250 shows a year before the pandemic brought touring to a standstill, and they've kept busy over the last two years with creative ways to continue bringing their music to fans. They performed a programme of front-yard gigs in their home town of Durango, and produced the online series Sidecar. Now back on the road and with their new album due for release later this year, Stillhouse Junkies are sure to win many new fans on their first visit to Europe.
